  • Pray against the intensifying persecution of Believers in the country.

  • Pray that Believers would be emboldened to evangelize and multiply.

  • Pray for the Believers that face systemic persecution through laws banning freedom of worship.

  • Pray against blasphemy-laws and proselytizing charges that have landed many believers in prison. 

  • Pray for imprisoned Believers to be released and for those still in prison to be comforted and protected.

  • Pray for the many congregations that are composed of Arab, Berber, and foreign believers that are experiencing great unity and exhibit a great and growing faith.

  • Pray for peace among Morocco and Algeria and the growing conflict between both nations.

  • Pray for healing of relations with France, Algeria’s former coloniser.

  • Pray that communication and peace would be made between the two countries.

  • Pray that the diaspora in Europe (particularly France) would meet Jesus and be called to return to Algeria to spread the Gospel.

Ethnic Groups

Arab-Berber 99%, European less than 1%

Although almost all Algerians are Berber in origin (not Arab), only a minority identify themselves as primarily Berber, about 15% of the total population; these people live mostly in the mountainous region of Kabylie east of Algiers and several other communities; the Berbers are also Muslim but identify as culturally Berber rather than culturally Arab; Berbers have long agitated, sometimes violently, for autonomy; the government is unlikely to grant autonomy but has officially recognized Berber languages and introduced them into public schools.

Arabic (official), French (lingua franca), Berber or Tamazight (official); dialects include Kabyle Berber (Taqbaylit), Shawiya Berber (Tacawit), Mzab Berber, Tuareg Berber (Tamahaq)

Religions

Muslim (official; predominantly Sunni) 99%, other (includes Christian, Jewish, Ahmadi Muslims, Shia Muslims, Ibadi  Muslims) <1% (2012 est.).
